Hi all, got an opportunity to get and put in a S3 Au Windsor 220KW engine into my EF XR8. Has anyone done this and how hard is it? Is there computer/electrical differences??
Thanks in advance

Yes computer is different. some plugs such as the MAF plug is different.

You'd have to run the AU ECU and wiring to get that to work.

But while the engine is out that wouldnt be too hard.

Just grab the heads and manifold and swap those over.
Pretty much the same engine then.
Just MAF and TB would be different.

Ive done a AU S2 5.0 into an XH ute. It's basically the same except you have a 5.0 harness(read 104pin EECV) to start with and the XH had a 4.0 with the 60pin EECV. The entire engine and much of the under dash side of the AU harness was used which means it now has Smartshied rather than just Smartlock. If you don't want to fit a dizzy to the engine it's the way to go, otherwise you'll need to fit a dizzy and use your original EF V8 harness.
The EF harness is the easy way out for sure.

Grab the whole engine and swap the heads and manifold and sell the block or keep it and do it up.
Thats what I would do.
You'd learn heaps about the engine.

If your not interested how about I get the engine :D :D

So the whole changing of the computer/harness is due to just the coil pack? Is it easy to install a dizzy onto the AU v8 engine?
btw thanks for the help fellas , this is most useful info

Yep, easy as. Just undo the bolt, take out the Cam sensor and drop your distributor in. Some of the other sensors on the engine have different connectors but you just need to fit the ones off your current 5.0 engine to go with your original harness. The TPS and ISC valve also have different connectors. You can either splice the AU connectors into the harness or use your original ISC valve so it still plugs in. The TPS has a larger bolt pattern unfortunately so you may still have to cut your original TPS plug off and splice on an AU one. The best way to do this is to use an old TPS and cut off it's flying lead and connector and use it to make an adaptor between your original harness plug and the new TPS. That way if you need to go back to the old style plug it's just a matter of removing the adaptor.

EBTS50 has done the engine only into his car IIRC, where as I have done the complete AU eng and electrics conversion (BEM, ECU, Smartshield, keys,.... the lot)

PM me for more info.

Chris
