You can do it at home. Out with the auto, converter & flexplate, in with the flywheel, clutch & T5 is pretty straight forward. Get someone to help with the lifting though, they are really heavy when you are lying down. And make sure the 50oz counter weight is lined up in exactly the same position.

Swapping pedal boxes is a big PITA however  If I did it again, I'd contact Mal Wood in QLD & just pay for a clutch pedal pin to fit into the auto's pedal box.

& don't try to fit a 6 cyl box without an expensive custom lengthened input shaft & custom bellhousing either.

It's not. They are the same basic design, but the input shafts are different lengths, the bellhousing, ratios, synchro material, bearings & load ratings are all different. With enough money the 6 cyl box can be modified to fit, but it's not cheap.

Thats because the input lengths of the 6cyl T5 & a top loader (& other 4 speeds in X series) are almost the same. To do it your way in an E series body, you then need a longer tailshaft, a V8 4 speed bell housing, a modified console & a go go gadget arm to reach the shift lever.

I got my input shaft lenghtened and it cost me $160. That was the only mod that my 6 CYL box needed to fit behind my windsor.

Usually conversions like this have the different in shafts taken care of by the bell housing and clutch plate changes.

I got it done at a place called The Gearbox Factory, also known as The Gear Repair Company. They are located at Greenacre in Sydney.
