gday guys.
well after my mate decided to go a 2nd hand engine after the 3.9 had blown its head and water jacket he decided to get a 4.0 from a eb to put in. We picked it up today and all was fine for about 10mins then this really loud tapet noise started...now im assuming that the bloke who did the engine just put in s**t cheap oil as its a duel fuel car and really needs 15-40w oil....while its idling it doesnt make this noise but when you are driving it it really stands out. changing the oil now to some 15-40 grade as thats what i run a my duel fuel 8 to see if that fixes the prob. One question thought...would a bad spark cause this prob? i dont think so myself but im not 100% sure cheers.

If the motor has just been built it is possibnle that the oil gallery feeding one of the hydraulic lash adjusters is partially blocked. To work out which one it is try grabbing a decent sized screwdriver and whack the metal end up against the rocker cover and the handle end in your ear. Starting at the front work your way to the back. The rattle will be real loud over the dodgey one!
Hope this helps mate!

Hope this helps mate! 2nd hand motor mate only has 150000kms on it....should i do this with the engine running or off? regards

15-40W may be too thin for a used engine. Try some some thicker oil, or try half a litre of Moreys oil additive to your existing oil. Moreys is fantastic for engine noises.

Easy to say but that was gunna be my next suggestion. Lucky its under warranty but if the oil pump is stuffed there is no telling what damage has been done to the bottom end.

I understand 'stockstandard' (who is always very helpful and informative) expalined to me what hydrualic lash adjusters look like and how they get pumped up with oil, but how does it work, its just a small disc. Is it because it forms some sort of seal that simply applies pressure using oil pressure to cushion the lash?

Well after all that has happened(replaced timing chain, replace oil pump) they still couldnt get it right so they have decided to rebuild the engine. They are going to replace all seals and gaskets and strip 2 engines to get the best parts out of both(both engines have around 150000kms) not to mention the other parts that were installed to try and fix the original problem.
Sideye will hopefully get his car back monday or tuesday after a basically 6 week wait for it to repaired and after an initial outlay of $800 for the 2nd hand engine he is basically getting a recod engine for 800 and another 100 for a xr6 cam installed. hopefully this will work out otherwise insurance job might be in order
