I just put a broom handle thru when I did my cam, then hung a bag with some bricks in it off the other end of the broom handle... Didn't change the tensioner at all

lets say if installing a cam and i let the slack go, will the tensioner take up the slack and therefore be too tight, or will there be too much slack in the chain once the cam gear is back in position?

It'll be too tight and you'll have to reset the tensioner as described above.

a couple of years ago i had the opportunity to work with a bloke who didnt feel it was neccessary to reset the tensioner cos "i've never had to before, they stretch". anyway his time came when he started the engine and before he had a chance to walk from the key to the front of the car it made a horrible bang and a couple of rattles before it stopped.
pulled the rocker cover off, found the chain butchered. lowered the sump to remove the timing cover and found the shaft that drives the distributor and oil pump had sheared off at the front. bottom line it was cheaper to get a secondhand engine from the wreckers than it was to fix. in the company i used to work for they had a chain snap shortly after start up after a head was fitted which destroyed the rest of the engine. i didnt see it but we recieved a memo on it.
