I am having trouble installing a aftermarket arial, its a semi automatic Aerpro AP3 which is sold as a direct factory replacement. The arial has basically two wires coming from the motor apply power one way and it rises until you remove power and reverse the power and it falls until you remove the power.

Looking at the arial connector from the NL dash both lines seem to have power on both while the ignition is on and for a little while after the ignition is turned off. I have an after market HU but I have the arial signal connected to the correct wire on the dash loom. Does anyone know how this is supposed to work?

ok from my understanding the reason it has power for a short amount of time is because the arial closes when the car is turned off, the power therefore allows the arial to drop down hidden, with an aftermarket headunit, providing it had an electric arial wire (kenwood do) which is a different wire to the remote wire for an amp (remote is powered when stereo is on, arial is only powered while the stereo is on) if this only works one way i sujest installing an arial switch such as what EB's use which allow you to put the arial up and down yourself.

you say they both have power... do you think it needs 2 sets of power to stay up? and when one switches off it drops?

i sujest having a much around with it before you install it. i have one in the back seat of my falcon at the moment, ill have a look at it tomorrow and see if i can work it out

Thanks but I dont see how this can work , unless the BEM output is sensing curent, the both rise and fall together from what I can see so there is never a voltage difference between the two to drive the motor. Putting a lamp across the two it never lights.
I might have to have another look at the arial input to the BEM perhaps my HU is not giving the signal to raise the arial.

I think you'll find that you'll need a load across the two aerial output wires - when I installed an EF high series BEM in the XH, I found I was getting strange readings with a meter. I plugged in a spare ford aerial (broken mast), ran it also with the half height switch, and it ran as per normal.

At the time, I was already running an aftermarket semi automatic aerial, so what I did was bypass the semi auto circuit and ran it directly off the two motor wires. Normally the motors have an overrun clutch, so it shouldn't be an issue. Only thing is it doesn't have half height (just extends to full height), but it does raise and lower with a few seconds of overrun. I'd say like you've said, that the BEM may run current sensing, and possibly a timer as well. The ford aerials are probably matched to the BEM, although with theory it shouldn't make a huge diff.

So after the novel I've written above, I'd suggect trying it by tapping power directly onto the motor wires.

EDIT: After reading your post properly again: Have you plugged it and tried running it ??
