Hey lads,
Just wanted to know if I need a special primer to go on (before my chrome) paint on semi-bare metal. I'm doing this to my spare Fairmont grill surround. I have some plastic primer and black and white spray paint. Can I use any of this stuff as primer? Or do I have to head down to super cheap and get some special metal primer? O and I'm right to use my normal clear coat on metal (after chrome paint)? Cheers.

if it is bare metal it will need primer. if it is already painted you should be right to just sand it back a little and paint over it

Well it's semi-bare mate, lol. Some areas the paint was cracked and bubbled, so had to scrub them right back. So I go buy some primer?

if it has cracked and its now part bare metal you might be better off sanding it all back to bare metal. that way you will get a smooth surface, no ridges etc etc.
what sort of grille is this off? was it painted a colour or chromed?

Here is a picture.
I did a medium strength sand with a a*** sandpaper then a light sand with a fine sandpaper. To the touch, it is all very smooth and level. Note the big batch of metal at the top is when I thought I could sand it back to a nice finish, lol.

hmm i always thought they were plastic. oh well.
if it is metal then i would just do a couple light coats of primer on the top half, kind of blending it in with the sourrounding areas. if that makes sense

Septone automotive Super Etch Primer is what I have used. I used it on my XR 8 bonnet vent grills.
Then I coated with 3 coats of Australian Export black gloss enemal paint. Came up a treat. |

apply 2-3 coats of primer making sure you sand each layer back with 2000 grit making it smooth before applying the next layer,

Okay, letting last coat of primer dry now, then I'll give another lite sand.
