Hmmm, so does that mean it's not wise to park in mud on the side of the driveway? I mean like every day type thing.
It isnt' always mud, usually dirt. But when it rains my car sits there in the mud.

I'd say that car has been near lots of mositure, my 91 LTD isn't rust proofed and it has no rust under the guards or anything yeah thats what i thought its only surface rust just paint over it in rust converter then a sound deadner or something over the top gee anyone would have thought id had holes in it from rust or something |

Water drains through that area, and theres sound insulation. So if the drain is blocked, the insulation will get wet and stay wet.
So pull off the inner plastic guard and clean out the leaves and dirt. And if the insulation is soaked pull it out and let it dry.

if its just surface rust just sand it back. get some rust converter thingy ma bob and then what tim said....paint over it and put sound deadners.....that way u have less road noise and you protect the metal from harsh enviroments.

that main lump of rust there would probly be dirppin water inside there and it will be running down to the sill i think,,exess water dripping after a wash may be an indicator of it ,,i h8 pulling guards off but i may just do it

When I painted on my sound deadener I took those plastic guards off and did behind them. Didn't see anything like that, a lot of dirt behind the sound deadner material though. BTW I also painted the plastic guards with the sound deadener. Painstaking effort all of that.
