Hey guys.
Got a leakin master cylinder. after a drive if ya pop the bonnet you can see a streak of brake fluid down it and that black thing. if ya take the cap off the rubber seal is sucked into the fluid at one end. now i think it may be leaking where the plastic resiviour joins the metal arm, but after driving its usually all oily cause i think it starts its leak there, then the vacumme pulls the rubber bit in, then it seaps from around the lid. its not a bad leak, takes a month or 3 for it to drop a cm or so. now, how hard/expensive are these to replace? do you have to replace the whole assemply, or can you just put a new tank on top or replace the seals? cheers.

piece of piss to replace if its anything like the ED one. just a few nuts that connect to some metal lines. i replaced my whole assesmbly, picked it up for 60 bucks second hand. a reco one your looking at 150 +

Had same problem. I paid just last month 167 for a new master + labour. no probs anymore.

Clean the area with metho and check every few days to confirm where the leak is coming from.
If it is the seals at the reservoir base, drain the reservoir with a syringe, down to the two ports, remove the reservoir (held in with a self tapper IIRC), replace the two seals and refit the reservoir, and top up. If you do this carefully you shouldn't need to bleed the system. Worked for me . . . .

these seals, are they a seperate part? avaliable from ford? ill be careful, dont wanna bleed the system, seeing as i did that last week. i am pretty sure it is the seals as the whole metal arm is usually all oily

No probs dude.
You'll get them from a brake place, as usual with brake rubber parts they aren't cheap, IIRC about $10-$15 for the two seals, which look like discs with holes in them. You should be able to carefully lever them out, dip your newies in brake fluid and carefully press them in. Hardest part of the job is refitting the reservoir - maybe a tad tight. If you keep the fluid level to the top of the ports you should be right, as when you fill the reservoir, all bubbles will rise - if the fluid level drops into the piston area, then air bubbles can get caught, thus requiring bleeding.

just replace the master cylinder cost me 110 from repco and i put it on my self. when u put the new one in don't forget to bleed it.

Good call - particularly if you confirmed the leak is coming from there. No point making extra work and spending more money if you don't need to.
