When starting the ef cold theres a rattling/knocking sound from around the power steering pump, then after a few minutes it stops. Replaced pump with one from a wrecker which seemed to have a new pulley on it and even though it wasnt as bad it still did it, any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

spray some water or CRC belt grip on the belt while engine at idle, if the noise goes away, it's a worn belt.
Commom problem on EF/EL's for a worn belt to make wierd noises on that big pwr str plastic pulley. cheers............

I agree, sounds like the belt may be worn. Check your pulley over for hairline cracks as when the belt applies pressure to this crack, could cause your knocking.
To check if its internals of the pump, take the cap off. If the noise is noticably louder with cap off, then you picked up a dodgy pump. If the noice is no different then the pump is pumping fine. I rebuild pwr steer pumps and racks, and ive found that half the time its either the pulley, or the other half is a blown o'ring inside causing valve plates to move when they shouldnt.

Another thing to check is the alternator bolts, if they are loose it will rattle around.
Also, If you get a long screw driver put one end on the power steering pump/alternator/water pump and the other on your ear you will easily find which is making the noise.. |

its been suggested to me that it might be the belt but since it was replaced new by a mechanic 3-4 years ago i thought that it might have something to do with a vane sticking in the pump but im no expert , thanks for the help, ill see what i can find.
