It would be you lash adjusters. They are in the rocker gear assembly and the sit between it and the top of the valve, one of them or more isn't adjusting properly and is blocked or not working, could be low oil pressure. Generaly just needs replacing, sometimes u can add some auto trans fluid to the oil may stop it, THINNER OIL GETS IN!.

my xr6 did this.
replace the hydraulic lash adjusters.
it's not that hard to do.

hmmmm, would this just be a coincidence being that the noise started as soon as they put the head back on, from the first time they started it?

it could be, but if you've just done the head it'll take a little while for the noise to stop.

I'm a mechanic for a ford dealership, 830 bucks man, u got off lightly, our dealership charges 1500 or so for a headjob. Yeah just renew all the lash adjusters. All you need to do is take off the rocker assembly, don't touch the timing, renew all the adjusters, and the bolt her back down. They are around 25nm for the 10mm bolts. The trick is to undo it and do it up evenly so you don't crack the rocker assembly.

Is it all of the tapping or just the 1? If sounds like all it could be a blockage. If it is take it back and have them check it, as a head job involves removing the head which may have left some deposits in the oil system.

assuming they are the same as the later e series and au you need shims to fix this but if the just did the head they should do this for you
