ive just finished putting my engine in and i plan on starting it in the next couple of days....i got a Crane 2040 cam in there but there is no definate instructions on the cam break in.....all it really says is "keep rpm above 1500 for the first 30 mins of operation and change rpm regularly..."

any one got any specific suggestions or should i just follow the above

when running in a fresh motor with a big cam it is wise to slowly take to to 1500 revs for about 30 mins.when driving car get it to 100ks for bout 10 ks then slowly back it of to 80ks. for 10 ks than up to 100ks.and get it to 120ks .for about 3to5 ks .then run on 100 ks for the rest for about 5or 6 hundred ks it should start loosing up by then .i hope this helps

i was under the impression that roller cams don't need running in.......

take rocker covers off and pull the dissy out. Put a 5/16 socket taped to a speedbar and turn the oil pump drive untill oil comes out all of the rockers. Put it all back together and start.

its all been done.....i put the oil in a few minutes before i started it so the top end had oil in it....and i left the dizzy lead off and cranked the motor over a few times to build up pressure.....then it started first go and i kept the revs above 1500 rpm for bout 20mins........
currently running the engine in now.......got about 30kms on the engine

You obviously have no mechanical skills, why would I bother writing that if it was s**t? Do you know how else to prime the oiling system without turning over the motor???? You should never turn over a fresh motor/cam without checking oil pressure.

i agree you should always prime theoil pump and make shore ther is oil in the top end before you even wind it over

if you really get carried away, get an OLD empty gas bottle, remove the valve, fill it with water... drill a hole and weld a bolt with the same size thread as a air valve nipple.

make a pipe to fit into the tank (like an aerosol can) prime the bottle up with fresh oil. make an attachement with a tap and add it to the oil sender hole on the block...
when the tanks charged with air.... open the tap and prime up the donk...


been done for years. and im sure theres a device to do it better.

now that i've typed this.... i have no idea why and yep... contemplating pressing submit.. but here it goes

I reckon that 30 mins is excessive but it is necessary to bed the cam for around 15 mins at least. 30 mins is probably a good idea and we used to use a drill to turn the oil pump drive for plent of pre-lubing.
