I'm not 100% sure. but I think it is a part of the door latch assembly.

Are you talking about the the lock mech that locks & unlocks when the key is turned or ya mate rests his arm on the door.

I'm pretty sure it is the senser that checks whether or not the door is open and sends it to the display on the instrument cluster. I am pretty sure that in the EF/L Fairmonts it is on the door latch and not the light switch, so I assume it is the same in this case, I may be wrong.

yeah it is a unit that looks to plug into the latch mechanism inside of the door, on my rear door it was just hanging not attached to anything but even after depressing the button the door open light stayed on.

I have another dash installed that everything works and also fitted another sender in the door but I am still getting a flapping right rear door on the dash gauge, any idea what would cause it to display open when the door is closed?

If the warning is flapping then the sensor is not connected to the cluster, if it is just the one door then a wiring fault or faulty sensor

Swapped the sensor from the faulty door into another door and the sensor works fine, what other ways to track down the fault?

Starting from the cluster you can place a 220ohm resistor to ground and the door should show closed.
Work your way back to the door.
