My ea is not fitted with power windows but the trim i've bought is from an eb with power.

Question is its obviously easy to punch a hole into the trim for the winder, but in the rears the ashtray/lighter will be in the way of winder rotation.

Is simply fitting speaker mesh in place of the removed lighter a good solution? Or has anyone got a better idea?

A better idea would be to fit power windows.

Yeah definately go power windows, with your car being older then most there should be lots of parts for the conversion around, and at an affordable rate.
I think the old EA fairmonts had the switches for all windows just in front of the centre console? I'm not 100% sure on that though. But not needed as long as people keep their windows up when leaving the car :)
