to build a balanced motor,if you get heaps and weigh the piston rod combo you eventually get the weights really close, file some cast off the heavier rods untill you have 6 the same weight, thats the plan anyway

Why not take any old set to an engine shop and get them balanced?

Stupidest thing I've ever heard.
Blu tak melts with a lighter you fool.
Use clay.

It cant hurt, but you wont have a balaced engine when your finished. Balancing rods for example involves more than matching the weight of the rods.

Do you have equipment to r&r pistons/rods?

Have to ask yourself if its worth the messing around. Getting a professional to balance a rotating assembly to 1/10 of a gram costs about $175 for an I6 engine (that includes pistons, rods, crank, balancer and flywheel).

Yeah personally i think you're wasting your time, all they do is grind some off the top of the rod and off the bulk of the cap to get weight right anyway.
Better off sending the whole bottom end in, as stock said it will be under $200 wherever you go.
