You cant check oil level

The fliud level should level with the filler plug in the side of the box, at operating temp.

the filler plug on the right hand side of the transmission is where you check it..

Why did they go from having a dip stick in the early models then to just the plug in the trans?

There were complaints that the BTR's leaked to much fluid so they closed up as many of the external holes as they could. The dipstick went as well as the external band adjustments.
