Hi guys,
I have a 97 EL 6 cylinder with about 260 000 km on it. I got a friend of a friend who can port and polish it and shave the head a bit. I wanted to change to the AU metal head gasket any way because its still on the original. Just wondering if its ok to get the head done and just change the head gasket. Or should I change rings, pistons etc. Also he asked what 'cc' I want for the porting, because it would help him a lot. Just wondering what people would recomend, seeing as i want to put in a cam later on. Cheers. |

Just do a clean up of the ports & just polish the exhaust ports only, don't go overboard with it. you'll just end up losing intake air velocity. Cc = {cubic centimeter} its use to measure the volume of the combustion chambers & most time the ports as well. making sure that all the chambers have equal amount of volume by using liquid.

260,000kms a still on its original head gasket? Thats got to be some kind of record for a Eseries ford doesnt it?

porting it without fitting a cam to utilise it will make it go backwards. the volume is unchanged but the path is increased which as slick said slow the velocity down.
at 260,000kms the bottom end of the engine couldnt be that strong anymore. if u do up the top end it'll put pressure on the bottom end so i reckon it'd be a good idea to slap a set of rings in there while u got it apart

Thanks for the reply's guys.
For the rings, they need the engine to be pulled completely apart right? If you up the compression, doesnt that increase the efficiency so counter act the negative side of the increased path? ie. allowing me to wait a bit for a cam without making things worst. Thanks for the clarification hans, was kinda hoping for a no brainer straight forward number hahahaa ignorance AdamN: He can only do it at his work, so he said theres only some times which he could do it. I will ask him next time I see him and I might be able to get a more definitive answer for you. Cheers |
