g'day thrillseekers
 , I gotta question about ECUs. I want to scource an ECU from a wreckers to replace mine, which I think is playing up 'cos I can't set my base timing.  (coil is brand sparkly new, plugs are new, leads are sorta new), and yes, I have bridged the A and B terminals.
Enyway, what numbers do I look at on the ECUs? I have, in my garage, two different ECUs. one I know is from an EF, and one from a hybrid EL (I think) but when I compare the numbers on the ECU in my car, nothing matches. So, what are the important numbers????? (Mine is a hybrid) |

you might need to state your car model. (not just EL)

EFs are coil pack. So they are a no go on a EL

I know that an EF ECU wont fit an EL. It is a '98 EL, it is a hybrid motor with the AU head, and the shorter rocker arms, and the dizzy.
The numbers that are on the ECU I have are:3DBC, plus a lot of other numbers, none of which match the numbers on the ECU in the car at the moment. (I can't remember what the numbers are tho') |

The numbers that are on the ECU I have are:3DBC, plus a lot of other numbers, none of which match the numbers on the ECU in the car at the moment. (I can't remember what the numbers are tho') might be something like 98DA 12A650 AA depending on what model EL it is.

hokay, now we are getting somewhere. So, Leroy, I should only consider that number, not the other numbers? I.e.: the 98DA...........?
What other considerations should be taken when choosing an ECU? you say what model EL, are there only two basic types, the EF/L with the "standard" engine, and that with the "hybrid" (discounting manuals etc)? |

The standard and hybrid ECU's are the same.
If your's is a bog stock auto I6, you'd be looking for a 96DA-12650-Bx or 6DBx. Where the x is is just the revision code. C is one of the later codes. The 3DBC ECU you have is late EB2 or ED. |

Yeah, I have just discovered that thro a PM.
The ECU was just sitting on the floor of the car. Somone obviously just dropped it there. I thought it was too good to be true that I didn't have to pull it out. One learns from ones' mistakes 
Thanks for all the info, I will do better next time, I promise Yep, Arm79, it is a bog stock auto. Are the later revision codes good, or are they sort of "indifferent" to the running of the car? |

I have an EL Ghia, so the ECU code is 6DJx.
I've had 6DJA, JB, JC and JE ECU's in my car, and could not tell the difference at all. But means I can't really comment on the standard I6 ECU's. If you're interested, I'm pretty sure I have a Cop and Fairlane ECU floating around at home that I'm not using anymore. If you're interested in one of those, let me know. |
