I’m writing in on behalf of my Dad who owns a 96 Ford Falcon I6. For the past year his Automatic gear box has been playing up and he wondered if anyone else has experienced this problem.
Symptoms: When placing Shifter into Drive position take 5 seconds before first gear will engage. Has trouble determining between first and second gear usually ends up revving hard in neutral before selecting the gear. At about 40km and pressing the accelerator to kick down from 2nd to 1st also holds in neutral for 5 seconds revving hard before selecting gear? He has had the Computer Chip replaced on the side of the Transmission and didn’t fix it and now the Mechanic is suggesting it might be a solenoid in the gear box. Before making the costly decision to have more parts replaced thought we would ask on here for some help. Any help appreciated?

Did the guys servicing the trans noticed it? a good operator would let his client know whats going on. was it just a drain & fill job or a full reverse pressure clean/flush? it might be one of the solenoid is dying on you. e.g {S5 solenoid} also check the ground wire to the auto, making sure its clean & tight. This also can course a conflict with the ECU. return the car back to the shop.

Off the top of my head here are a few possible causes. As said any service person that knows the correct type of oil to put in should have been able to diagnose the problem.
Oil level low or wrong type. No dip stick to check but the filler hole indicates a full box when oil flows out cold and engine stopped. Internal Oil filter blocked. Oil cooler blocked or pipes to or from crimped. Radiator oil cooler blocked. Solenoid or solenoids faulty. Pump faulty. Torque convertor faulty. There is diagnostics available that you can check the solenoids or the selector switch.

It was a full reverse flush.

Maybe she's just telling you she want's a manual? hehe, sorry...
I'd guess solioids or blockages, unless the whole thing's in the slow process of exploding...

sounds like the bands in the auto might be too loose or maybe the oil in the box was the wrong type and the oil is too thin
