Does anyone know how to take the plastics off around an automatic shifter?

What type of car? If it's an EF/EL then get a screwdriver and put a rag over it so you dont damage the plastic and then lever it up. It should just pop out. You may need to change gears so you can get the plastic ribbon out though.

Put her in Park, pull up the bottom of the plastic, put her in 1st, pull up the top bit.
(EF/EL)

you can twist off the shifter too which takes all of 4 secs, so you can remove the plastic surround completely

To take that off you have to take off the gear stick surround. The thing with P,R,N etc on it. Once you got that out there are 2 bolts and also 2 more bolts further up from the gear stick when you remove that little rubber carpet thingy. I think that's it.
If not you might need to remove the stereo surround and there might be 2 more bolts...but try the other 4 first. hope that helps phong =P~
