My car since putting in the T5 occasionaly starts to run on 5 cylinders. I know its definatley the 5th cylinder as well. It only happens when i start to flog it then after a while she just drops to five and stays there. this is what i have done to eliminate some problems.
- Got new leads and plugs. - New distributor cap and rotor. - checked to see if there was spark by pulling out plug. (there was spark) - ran injector cleaner. anybody got ideas as she runs bad and sounds tough... I need it fixed coz shes awesome to drive when its on six. has this happened to anybody else, and is there usually any problems with that specific cylinder. By the way dont have that much money atm. Please Help... cheers, brad |

Id try a few things
Pull the spark plugs out and compare the colour of #5 to the others, while they are out, do a compression test. If all that looks good, then try a self test on the ECU. Does it use any coolant or oil?

do ALL the plugs arch out, esp cyl 1.
if youve got spark on all cylinders, check compression. if thats fine, test the injectors out. |

It's not duel fuel by any chance?
Had an old EA which ran on 5 cylinders on gas and 6 on petrol. do what stockstandard said first.

It's not the fail-safe cooling that's shutting down the cylinder is it?
::::Edit:::: My bad, its an EA... |

What does the colour of the spark plug mean. I'll try it this arvo and check. How easy is it to do a compression test and do i need a meter of some sort. Whats this fail-safe cooling business??? Never heard of it. Andno its not on gas. It doesnt use any coolant or oil either. how do u do a self test on the ECU. Cheers, Brad

I can't help with the rest, but I can explain the fail safe cooling...
Fail-safe cooling is a feature that later-model (not sure when Ford brought it in actually) Petrol Falcons have, if the engine is overheating, the computer will shut down cylinders to lessen the damage done... |

You can tell quite a bit from the spark plugs. You can tell if #5 is running rich or lean, if its coated in fuel you know its not firing, if its covered in oil you know something is broken. There are lots of guides on the net for doing this (google: "reading spark plugs"), for example - http://www.ngksparkplugs.com/techinfo/s ... qread2.asp
it wont be fail safe cooling - didnt come in to AU

definatly sounds like a spark or compression problem..
you said it sounds tough when its on 5.. when its on 5 what sort of sound do you hear? is it using more of less fuel even marginally? does the engine temp spike hot or increase prior to dropping a cylinder..? I would tend to lean more towards a compression issue.. possibly a warped head.

when running on the 5 cylinders does it surge (ie rock back and forth for a while) before returning to normal?

hydraulic lash adjuster. also known as a lifter.. if it were a HLA problem the motor would probably tick when running, does it?
