today i was ready to put my ticky head on, i have all the gaskets, new headbolts everythink was good to go ecept i had not taken the head in to be refaced yet, the guy i go to has it ready to be picked up 2hrs max anyways i took it there first up this morning thinking by the time it was ready i would have the car ready to drop the ticky back on BUT when i got there he had a look over it and said that two of the water jakets would have to be welded and also it had a warp in it so instead of being $60 he wanted $440 to repair it, so now i am lost what to do, is it really worth spening $440 on the head or would the $440 be better spent on a standard head or maybe put it towords a au motor, idea's please

it'd wanna be a complete reco @ 440 if the head is your in the first place,

get him to show you its warped, the galleries i can believe, but then again... the repair a stocko is the same kinda $$$ if its all what he claims!

yer he has a large straight edge he puts along side the where the head bolts go, he showed me all to be done and the middle is up by about 2-3mm, but he did say he could straighten and get a good even reface, but what i wanted to know is the head worth getting the $440 spent on it, what is the going price for a second hand ed ticky head in good condition?
and for $440 could i get my stock head to perform better?

in asnwer to your original question i reckon $440 is fair. you're not going to get much for 440 in the way of performance enhancements on an original head. with the tickford head u've already got the double valve springs and the bigger valves.

the unfortunate bit about welding is that it creates alot of heat. once he starts welding on the head then it distorts valve seats, head surface etc and it cant be avoided. if he has to cut one new seat then he has to cut them all.

from what u described he hasnt told you any lies and sounds fair

yer i might get a few more quotes before i decide what to do, if it was just over $200 to get the reco on the head i would have it done its just that on the top of the $440 the VRS and headbolts and stuff it end up around $550-$600 and i am thinking i could set up a low km au motor for a simalar price
