I have been thinking. When you put the dash into diagnostic mode it can tell you what gear you are in like the fairlane clusters do.

So im thinking there will be a cable within the car.I asume its the same one that gives all the other information to the dash cluster like the speed and rev's, temp and so on.

Now it wont be like a direct current, as in +4v is D and +6v is R. But it will be a series of data.

Now would it be easy to make something like this as 'wank' factor or not?

I dont want to hear 'look at the gear selector/selecter (females)' or 'get a fairlane cluster' (which im tring to get ahold of)

A lot of reverse engineering to get that data straight from the dash in my opinion.

You'd be better off looking at something more analgue.

The gear selector inhibitor switch is a variable resistor. A different gear position results in a different resistance value, which can be determined by looking at the current drop across the circuit.

You can therefore identify the gear selector position by monitoring the resistance values... then rig something up to illuminate the appropriate light for a given resistance value. In effect, that's all the car's computers are doing.

Exactly as he said. I know you said you don't want to hear this but get a fairlane cluster, its all there plus lots more.

Nope.

At a guess, i'd think at least BEM need to be replaced? And then add new door light switches etc etc

You can retain your current BEM, low and mid series will need a dimmer resistor for the LCD displays.

A hint !!!!
If you are wiring a trailer and are contemplating a fairlane cluster then wire the brake light back to the switch not the lights at the back.
