Hey guys,
Just had the biggest f*** up with the warrrantee company, the tools told me they wont cover me for the rear main seal to get fixed so now im down s**t creek without a paddle lol. Ne way my usual mechanic can no longer work on my car as his only hoist is broken and cost lots of $$$$ to fix so i can longer get my car fixed thru him. Went around to a few places locally and the average price seemed to be about $350-$450 to fix. The cheapest being $350, does this sound like a good price? Thanks

sounds about right to me.
remebering that 95% of that is labour with a $20 part auto or manual??? when i do them i drain the fluid out too, makes it alot easyer to lift out. and new fluid/oil can only be a good thing |

Yeah its and Auto, not too sure about how hes gonna do it bit it would have been nice it if he told me he was going to drain the Oil out of the gearbox... As i use Gulf Western tranny oil probally the best stuff out thier but yeah.
Ne way i thought $350 was pretty reasonable. Do these bastard rear mains still leak after they have been fixed thou?

they can leak, it depends on the condition of crank. if it's worn aroung where the seal runs they can still leak, but most of the time they don't re-leak for a few years
if you havn't had it done yet suply him with 5L of your tranny fluid and service kit, it shouldn't ad to the price to much. i do a pan change in my old mans 2 falcons avery 15000km and a complete flush every 30000km |

Yeah i only just serviced the gearbox about 10,000kms ago, i do rember the guy telling me about the crank thou, he said something about getting the seals or something done on that as well.
If i can manage to source a place to get my Gulf Western oil then i will do the whole shabang while hes at it and get the gearboxed serived too

your rear main seal is the crank seal.
and although you might not think it, the seal does wear the crank down. the easy fix for the a worn crank is a speady sleave. cheap as too |

I was gonna suggest a Speedy Sleave. I had to rebuild the 4.1 in my old XF when the rings went on it (@250,000km). After getting it back in and running the brand new rear main seal leaked. So I bought a Speedy Sleave and fitted it. It only cost like $10 or $15. I just dropped the auto tranny out and pressed it on with the motor still in the car. Very easy. Just apply a layer of grease to the outside suface (the one the seal runs on). Start it on to the crank and then use the flex-plate and bolts to press it on the rest of the way. However, You may wish to replace the seal as well. Depending on the age and condition of the old one.

no way, any one who does is that way is fool. it's far easyer to take the box out by its self |

speedy sleeves are very handy, we use them at for on seal journals! they work very well, and can be replaced just as easy once worn again
easier then welding the journal up and machining it

Okay i will ask the mechanic about the speedy sleeve when i go back there, surely he would know what it is. But he did say something about the crank but it was so loud in the work shop i could barely hear him lol.

Mate shop around Auto trans specialists I had mine done with a auto service for $180. I supplied the seal and the welsh plugs.
