Because they're setup to run at certain operating temps, you'll find too cold and it will probably run rich, everything is running off sensors.
My AU has stock everything and doesn't go over 1/4 to 1/3 on a hot day with the air on. If it were a pre EFI car then 160 is fine, but a cold running engine also creates more engine wear. |

Depends on what temp the ECU has as cold. My AU3 runs a 160 degree and with mods still gets a constant 12.5 L/100km average and down to 10 on a trip. (Au3 Pursuit 5.6 litre) Just opens sooner and stays fully open longer.

You dont need to change thermostat temp for different seasons anymore than you need to change the grade of oil for different seasons. Ideally when changing thermostat, you would also change the temp your thermofans switch on/off. (did EL have thermo's?) |

hi
i just chanded from a 192f thermostat to a 180f and unfortunatly i have trouble keeping the temp above 1/4 so would'nt a 160 f be a little to cold?? |

You can generally get a power increase by running the engine cooler. The question is for how long? Bore/ring wear increases exponentially with lower temps.
