my el xr6 is leaking oil from the timing cover,down the side.any tips to doing this job??i read somewhere you gotta drop the sump to keep one of the chain guides in the right spot,cant i just pull the head off n do it that way,leaving the sump in place??

You sure its the timing cover and not just the tensioner seal, which is way more common.

what side is it leaking? drivers or passenger side of timing cover.

its passenger side,not the tensioner,i can see some gasket hanging out the side and someone before i got it has put a big bead of silicone down the seal to stop it...

Yep, you can pull the head off and do it, make sure you put a bead of silicon in the corner where the head gasket joins the timing cover. When you put the new gasket on the timing cover, it can be a bit of a pain the re-align the bolt hoes for the cover, you may have to press down quite firmly onto the sump gasket.

nah u gotta drop the sump a bit. wen i rebuilt my motor on the stand i put the sump on first, and got caught out bcos the chain guide that sits in the timing cover hits on the edge of the sump. and if u just pull the timing cover off with out pulling the sump down u'll lose the guied in the sump and u'll have to drop it anyways. i dont even think u can drop the sump in the car unless u drop the k frame.
