Hey i'm wanting to repaint the rear skirt on my ED and i'm wondering if it's something I could do on my own without having to fork out to a pro. It's only a small bit and I don't care if it turns out looking a bit shoddy, the main reason I want to spray it is to cover the scratches left by some tool in a parking lot. What would I need and how would I go about doing it.

I've got a compressor but no spray gun as yet. Is there anywhere that you can buy the paint (it's, I think T9 Cobalt Blue). What are the steps, would I need to sand the skirt back or could I just clean it up (get all the dirt off and then spray an undercoat and a couple of coats of the body colour then clear coat.

if it has scratched you will have to sand them all out probably back to plastic, you then want to prime it, sand it then probably spray a high build over it to make sure all scratches are out, sand that back again. then prime it again. then you want 3 coates of bascoat on it light sand in between coats then a few coates of clear.

honestly for something small sand it all back ureself then get a painter to do it, he is already tooled up and will get the paint to match thats the hardest part of the whole job

Yeah I thought actually spraying and everything would be the easy part, but finding the paint could be a bit difficult. So basically I'd just sand back to the plastic, the scratches are through to it but luckily not too deep.

What would you use, i've sot an orbital sander, what sort of grade paper, a*** to begin with, then fine when i've brought it back to the plastic to smooth everything off. How 'smooth' would it need to be for painting, i'm assuming the undercoats take care of most of that.

yeah use a dual action orbital sander, you can hand sand or anything but dueal action will gett it off the quickest, can buy a air one cheap if you dont have one. if the scratches are deep you can use some bondo or something to fill them out a lil.

spraying colour isnt always that easy have to be careful of runs if its to wet and orange peel if the coat it to dry, will probably take you a few goes of getting your spray gun right etc to avoid this.

the paint should be able to be picked up, i would imagine you would have a local auto paint shop otherwise any panel beating place that does paint probably can mix it for you.

if using 2k paint you will need a piant suit and a decent respirator if you dont want ure lungs eaten away.

What sort of paints are there, i've heard mention of acrylic but I don't know what I should be going for on a part which really doesn't get looked at too often and isn't really exposed to the elements.

yeah different types of paint, 2 pak needs to have a clear coat put on but its a lot more durable and shines more than acrylic, for something like cobalt i would suggest its painted in 2 pak, i think acrylic in that colour might be hard to match it up, best to talk to a painter about that one though

Spray painting is a lot harder than you probably think. I am in the middle of painting my laser, and it has become so frustrating especially when it orange peels.

Just get it done right, probably not worth the hassle of doing it yourself.

The difference between 2pac is cured by a chemical reaction hence the name 2pac product & hardner whereas acrylic is air dry
All metalic & pearl colours need to have a clear over the top to make them shine
All paint companies also do a range of solid basecoats that require clear to be applied over the top these are more common on your prestige range of vehicles
Cobolt blue is a mettalic therefore it would require a clear to be used
Colour matching is no harder in either 2k or acrylic as the base coat is very similar

I think I have explained it in the sticky at the top of this section
If people ask questions in the sticky then it will be there for all to see without having to search
