I'm gunna replace my steering rack boot and tie rod ends, just wondering if there's any point in replacing the rack ends (the rods that the tie rod ends screw on) aswell?

only if there is play in them... but if its original k's, and over 120,000 - then yeah might aswell

Um, What seals are you referring to?

Any yes, you can do the rack ends if u wish, for $30 (inlcu boots) or so....its simple and worth it....other wise, you run the risk of putting tie-rods in, then next week the rack ends will s**t em selves...pull apart over again.

This is just what I would do..unless i needed to cheap out lol.

At each end of the rack, the solid tube bit, there should be a seal at each end, to stop the fluid coming out.

Mate I dont know what rack you done, but there aint no seal at EACH end.

Only One end, and that will be the passenger side. The other is dead centre in the middle of the rack. The other seals are in the cast iron housing where the pinion is.

At the drivers side where there are teeth on the shaft, should only be grease. If you have oil in there, then you should replace all seals. To do so you have to centre your rack, then you gotta pull it apart, (mose well clean it up) and re-seal it. The tricky part is adjusting it so that the steering is perfect and won't feel mushy and also won't be tight.

So the rack does not come apart to change rack ends. You can change them with rack still bolted into frame, but will be alot easier to put them on with rack in a vice.

One last thing, count how many times the tie-rod ends turn should be around 14 and 1\2. This will get you as close as possible (if you tighten the same amount as it came off) to drive down to get a wheel allighnment.

If its not leaking dont bother with it, If you have never replaced one before you may cause more harm than good.

I agree. The end caps can be pricks to undo. But If its not leaking, then don't change it.

Theres some power steering fluid on the bottom of the drivers side steering rack boot... Just saw it then. Havn't had the steering fluid going down or anything lately but.

If there is oil on the INSIDE of either boot, your seals are screwed, if the oil is on the outside, 9 times out of 10 its the pressure switch that is leaking. But that other 1 time will be pinion seal leaking, which is the one where the steernig shaft\column connects to the rack.

If your fluid hasnt gone down, it will soon.

By the sounds of it, with all the things your doing to the steering side of things, could be easier to buy a reco rack (from me ha!) But the rest you should be fine with.
