Got an aftermarket cam being sent to me in teh next few weeks, don't know what type it is unfortunately, all I know is it suits ED through early EL. Was wondering how lumpy the cam has to be before I will need to get aftermarket valve springs?

You'd be more concerned with the overall lift of the cam to decide whether you need new springs or not.
Do you know the lift? |

Nah unfortunately not yet... Got it for free off a mate of a mate, just have to wait for him to get around to posting it off, that is unless he "lost it". You know how it is.
All I know is that the wreck it came out of had an aftermarket ecu for the cam, guessing something similar to the megasquirt 2 or something, because it was only a plug and play ecu... Worried about the life because the valve may not close in time for the piston? |

You are going to need to measure the cam up with a dial indicator. Sit the cam in the head and spin the engine over by hand while measuring the intake and exhaust lobes. If the lobe lift is much more than 0.245" consider bigger springs. If the intake lift at TDC is more than say 0.070" check the P/V clearance.

how do u spin the engine by hand, by turning the Harmonic Balancer? or do u have to do that remote switch thingy.

turn the balencer, or the belt whatever takes your fancy

yeah sorry, by turning by hand i mean taking the spark plugs out and spinning the nut on the harmonic balancer with a ratchet.
