how do you check with the dizzy signal to activate coil (no voltage)
cant make any sense from the s**t gregorys manual, only has xd to early xf dizzy with matal cap ?- mines plastic plug going in from l/h of dizzy side also not TFI (goint in from r/h) |

Also is this EFI or Carby ??

Yes I think so, Its not the same as XD-E as gregorys says webber carb vers with map no volts @ coil when cranking the gregorys explains how to check with older dizzy & EFI TFi not this one |

If you are not getting 12V at your coil while you are cranking, it has nothing to do with your distributor. There is a power feed from your ignition switch (via relays) that provides power to the coil and the distributor. Your distributor only provides the grounding switch to fire the coil.
I don't have an XF book on me, but I'd be looking at either your starter motor relay or your general power relay.

Is the starter motor relay inside above the handbrake?
I've checked the "engine" 15A fuse & its ok wouldnt if the relay was at fault, the starter wouldn't power also? I thought there was a sensor in those dizzys so that when eng rotates provides signal to power coil? |

I am thinking it is a wiring fault or fuse, not the relay itself. The coil won't be fed from the starter relay itself (my earlier post wasn't real clear on that, sorry) but another relay nearby (maybe the fuel pump or ignition relay if it has one). With a wiring diagram I could find it in seconds. I'll try and get a look at one tonight. {USERNAME} wrote: I thought there was a sensor in those dizzys so that when eng rotates provides signal to power coil?
I think the XF's use what was called the EEC3 or some bosch computer(ignition and emission control only, no EFI) in the non-EFI cars. The relay will be driven by that computer. This is all from memory, I haven't worked on a non-EFI XF for years. I'll report back later if I can get the factory XF manual of my dad.

Thanks, I didn't get a email note of your reply.
I can scan the gregorys one if that would be of any help but its only got the interior wiring? |

I haven't been able to find a schematic to look at, and the gregories one will have the ECU/Engine drawing. Scan it and I'll take a look.
