Here's a picture of the leak on my steering rack on the drivers side, any ideas?

And again with my painted artwork highlighting the drops. As you can see some are quiet high up that sensor (?) thing, and oil would fall down, not up, so it must be a leak above that - so should mean that the steering rack is still alright (I replaced the high pressure hose about a year ago and that hasn't shown any signs of leaking again, and the pump is clean around it from what I can see)...
http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/1720/dscn1596pantsep7.jpg The blop that I've called old is really dirty, might not actually be old, it's just got muck in it. O, and it's not leaking to the point that any is falling on the ground or anything like that. |

yeah its your rack. Its got internal leak. You can try going second hand from wreckers or best option is to get a reconditioned exchange unit.
Its not cost worthy to repair yours |

Its normally the pressure switch, easy and cheap to replace. I would do that before any rack replacment. Have you tried cleaning it then running it without driving to see exactly where its leaking?

Cars neither running or driving at the moment! The pressure switch is the one in the picture there with the blue electircal plug? Last edited by twr7cx on Sun Nov 26, 2006 5:01 pm, edited 1 time in total. |

Pop the plug off the pressure switch (it is the one with blue plug), and see if the plug has got fluid in side.
They are cheap and easy to do if it is that.

Forgot to say, with the driver's side boot still OFF. Full lock turn to the LEFT. This will expose the teeth on the shaft, If there is oil on\in the grease, and if those drops of oil were there BEFORE you peeled back the boot, then I stand by my previous statement.
But if the oil has dropped down from the switch area to the rack end AFTER you peeled back the boot, then its just your switch and you don't need to replace your rack. Its just that simple.
