I am thinking of hooking up a computer in my car to run all my songs and DVD's from.
It will be hooked up to a touch screen monitor in the front. Can anyone tell me if this can be done by a simple home computer and what sort of specifications it would need to have. Cheers Scott

Well if you only want it for music and to play DVDs....I wouldnt personally bother with a carputer. For alot less you can get a modified XBOX with the latest XBOX Media Center, massive hard drive etc. Easier to connect and use....will work via a touch screen or just use a cordless controller (benefit of doing so - touch screen head units/displays costs alot more...thus not getting the touch screen option allows more money for better quality display or larger display;) ).......
I'm happy to offer advice on either option ... running a carputer unless u get a 12V capable one will require a power invertor...these can be had from as little as $150 that will run a PC.... a TV-Out card will also need to be puchased for the carputer unless u are buying an actual "prebuilt carputer"

I have custom built 2 carpc's over the past few years, so if you are in any need of some advice, I'm happy to help you out. I'm actually seriously contemplating building a third soon.
Also recently created a circuit board which allows the computer to control 8 relays, which means in a car situation, if you have neon lights, you can control which one's are on, and which ones are off, or, you can choose to cycle between the eight. If you're interested, or anyone else for that matter, let me know.

I've got a carputer running and I love it.
Here's some links to my posts {DESCRIPTION} {DESCRIPTION} {DESCRIPTION} {DESCRIPTION} {DESCRIPTION} I have a BF XR6 Turbo with the premium audio (colour screen) and because I wanted to run the display to it I was pretty much stuck with the hardware I had to use. Your case might be different Panda

I've been through the carputer phase. Grew out of it, and got myself a proper MP3/DVD HU + TV. Much easier all around to install and use.
I still have the PC I used as a carputer, it 'twas a beast. Dual processor, 1GB RAM, 12" colour TFT, IR remote, wireless, TV, radio, GPS everything.

A normal home PC just chucked into the boot would be too big, have more ancillary devices that are needed for this application, more software that is needed for this application, the incorrect power supply for this application etc.
If you used the motherboard, RAM, HDD, Video Card, sound card, wireless card etc from a simple home PC and bought a 12Volt PSU (or a 12Volt to 240Volt Inverter) and used carputer specific software then yes, a modified home PC would do. Panda

Simple answer .. Yes ..
However yes as Panda said comes down to how much space in the car ...boot watever your prepared to loose... will need to run off a 240V --> 12v pure sine wave power invertor. How much u wanna spend etc
