Hello all,
Heres a different one for ya... I intend to fit 2 front bucket seats into the rear of my EF Ghia with the custom made armwrest i am making at moment.. Has anyone ever attempted this mod (in any sort of car) Or I would gladly accept any constructive comments/advice/criticsm you may have... Reason being...Custom armwrest houses a rear cup holder, ps2, the main dvd player and the a/v switching unit and well...some extra storage space. Regards Atech

Sounds cool; i like the idea and rekon it could be done very well
The one thing that comes to mind tho is isnt it illegal? Like correct me if im wrong but isnt your car registered to seat 5 people, you will need t change it to 4 people - dunno how or if you can do that.. Something to think about.

I'd start by talking about it with your local engineer and do it under his advice that way when it comes time to get an engineers certificate you shouldn't have any dramas. Enough of the theoretical talk though; Maybe start thinking about custom fibreglass pieces??? There's a dude on the site who writes his posts like some 'homey-g' from the 'west side' and he's been doing some one off fibreglass pieces maybe you could try to get his attention???

Cheers They are removable seats tho no? They are made for easy/legal removal. Im not having a go at the idea, i think its good, bt you'd hate to put so much effort into it n one day get d**k for it, just find out for sure 1st is all im saying. All ef/l sedans came FACTORY STANDARD with 5 or 6 Seats available.

Have you considered using bucket seats from a ute? a set with the centre fold up seat. Then your car would still seat 5 people.

legality-wise, it may be easier to get your rear seat trimmed to incorporate your custom armrest, cos it's gonna be a s**t easier to do that than get a new set of seat mounts, etc approved by an engineer

I didn't know that seat reducing was a crime, I thought only carrying more people than the car is registered for was wrong. Cheers

the bucket seats in the rear gets done a lot. If you go to car shows, have a look around - you will see quite a few cars like that. (usually have PS2's, DVD players, XBox or something in the centre)
You will need an engineers certificate for it.

check to see how much room you have between the buckets before you go chasing an engineer. the width between the wheel arches is generally narrower than the front and it pushes the seats together. The height and length of the squab canalso be a problem

go and talk to a motor engineer this week!
I've done all that years ago in a 70's landcruiser that had side benches You've got a dozen issues like propoer bolts and plates, capyured nuts or no, head room, seat belt effective ness etc and so on Seating capacity does not matter. You've modified the seats and you will need a certificate and take to pits to have rego amended with " as modified by engineer" And most important, make sure your insurer knows as if you have a bingle, they find out wheter engineered or not, you void insurance and might have to pay out for the rest of your life for someone you've injured any way, don't mean to dis your plan as it sounds cool. Any buckets in rear i've seen are sweeet (mostly forbies though) can't wait to see the pics with a scan of your approved and modified rego papers

Thats not a bad idea...I was thinkin about it myself....However th problem is that you are going to have to make up custom rails to screw into the raised part of the floor at the back. I guess you're not worried about the seats folding back when doin this mod. But the when the front seat is fitted into the back, it leaves a little room where the wheel arch is, and it doesnt look very pleasant. Altho im not sure how legal this is engineering wise, this is a crazy mod.

Yeah - the Landau's were fitted with 2 buckets in the back and bucket consoles on the outside of the seats. The rear seats are lower in frame height than the front and have no runners (bolt straight through the floor) with a 1.6mm channel gusset to give them the required strength. The engineering work involved in doing this wouldn't be too hard - but Regency Park is being kind of funny at the moment - your Shaker would need to be engineered before you fronted to them with another mod.
Next time I have the Landau out on the cruise instead of the FBT or NL, come and have a good look at the rear seat platform. Shane
