I recently painted some parts of my dash in a nice gloss black. I sanded the surface and all so it is nice and smooth.
The problem is that over time they have developed some tiny hairline scratchs that really stand out i was thinking of sanding them back again with some 1500 or 2000 grit sand paper and then applying clear over the gloss black. (this will restore the gloss) but - will the clear coat show hairline scratchs as badly as my current un covered gloss black finish i have now?

the clear wont show the scratches as much and it will be easier to polish when it does get scratched.If you are using 2pac use a good high solid clear or you could use a new ppg product called ceramic clear which is supposed to be as hard as glass

its only enamel stuff from a can, i am no proffesional painter 
But i did put a lot of time into prepping them and came out quite ok.

Just as well your getting advice from a professional painter then
I have a chrome t-bar surround with lots of tiny hairline scratches I'm not sure from what, but its bugging me. Thx for the Advice Nathan. |

fordzatmyplace use an enamal clear and when you are done bake it in your oven at about 60 degrees for 40 minutes leave it to cool down then give it a light rub with 1500 and do another 2 or 3 coats and bake again then if it gets scratched you will be able to rub them with 2000 and polish with cutting compound to bring back to perfect
millenium Try an alluminium polish such as autosol or bright shine that should get rid of most of them any that are deep use a bit of 2000 paper with water then use the polish after give it a polish with whatever you use on the exterior paint

cheers for the info. I'll start tomorrow morning when i am not at work and my mum isn't using the oven
may i ask why we put it in the oven??
