Hey guys, just interested in finding out something. Probably a stupid question, but the trans cooler lines that go into the radiator, which one goes in and which one goes out? The reason I'm asking is because I want to fit a second trans cooler, and need to know whether the oil will go through radiator, than through the two coolers to return cool oil to trans, or the other way around, which would seem like a waste of time having it the first place, coz radiator would actually heat up the oil????? My guess is the top one is the one that goes back to tranny, coz thats the one that goes to cooler??
I thank you guys in advance for your help, as I'm towing a caravan next week over holiday and would love for my tranny to be happy!! Cheers, Mark. |

Have you thought about bypassing the radiator? Most people will recommend that if your cooler is of sufficient size, that you bypass the radiator totally. I have done this in my AU using a PWR "Heavy Duty/V8" cooler kit - was about $90 for the lot.

The top fitting (on the radiator) is the one that goes out, so hook that one to the aux cooler and the out on the cooler to the line from the auto at the top near the radiator. then make sure you top up with correct ATF.

There are arguments for and against using the radiators heat exchanger.
The heat exchanger sits inside the cold side of the radiator. It not only cools the transmission fluid but also warms it up to operating temp quicker. Adding a aux cooler will mean the fluid will be cooled partly by the heat exchanger and further by the cooler. However They have been known to fail, causing coolant to leak into the transmission! Apparently most taxis bypass the radiators heat exchanger, by using a larger cooler to make up for the loss of cooling capacity.

taxi's need ATF coolers because of stop/start driving and heavy traffic. they keep the integredy of the ATF longer, for longer A/T life.
Remember, below 80kmh, leave it in 3rd, saves brakes and tranny.
