Can someone tell me what sort of resistance I should be feeling when attempting to freehand turn one wheel while the other is firmly on the ground?
Was replacing my brake pads today and noticed that it took quite a lot of effort to turn the wheel - and this was with the caliper completely off. It was comparable to trying to turn the wheel with the handbrake 60% on - i'd estimate 30kilos of force to the outer edge of the wheel. Is this normal, or should it spin free like a single spinner ?

yes it should be hard. The harder it is, the better condition the LSD is in.
BTW: Its a very bad idea to do this with one side of the car jacked up.

Thats good news then! Thanks for the info.
Why is it a bad idea to rotate the wheel in the air? Is it bad for the diff or the cones etc?

There should definately be force there to turn it, but it depends on the condition of the diff. Some diffs are that tight they may as well be locked, so youd be unable to run the wheel, while some lsds are that flogged you wouldnt notice much resistance there at all.

Because while your turning the wheel in the air, your also trying to turn the wheel thats on the ground. If you are not careful you will drive the car off the jack.

Nah, all is good - it was on a jackstand. Spare wheel was also under the body.
