Hey guys, a noise has developed on my EB 4.0l. I'm hoping its just a belt pulley, but it could also sound like a timing chain kinda whirring. I'm finding it hard to pin point. The noise i a squelling, scraping sorta noise coming from the front of the engine.
Fast replies would be greatly appreciated. Trav.

What car?
Could be a pulley bearing. Take the belt(s) off and see if it goes away.

2 acurate options:
1) take off the serpentine belt and spin each pulley. 2) i took my EF to ford and asked them to have a listem. they have like, a long needle on the end of a stethoscope that they can use to listen to vibrations. told me it was my idler and tensioner gone.... |

i have this problem in my el, it sounds more like from under the front of the rocker cover itself, ive been told its a stretched timing chain. ive also changed the pullies, for no effect...

ABW make them, can get them through Auto stores like Repco or Bursons, for not much at all. There a good bit of gear, I've used mine a few times. To rule out the pulleys/belts, remove the belts, and run the car (obviously not for long as your water pump isn't turning). If no noise then it is the belts/pulley. If it's anything like mine then it is probably the timing chain on the guide. |

yeah that stethiscope is cool, fun to listen to the inner working of your motor.
i concure with most above me, run the car with no belt hope noise goes away. |

just been thru a simular exercise with my el and it sounded exactly like a stuffed timing chain or lifters
but took off belt and run and noise dissappeared idler bearings were stuffed so i replaced - you beauty i thought an easy fix then murphy jumped in when i reassembled everything - exactly the same niose so it had to be either alternator /power steering /water pump or air cond compressor bearings i made my own stethoscope from some 10mm hose and discovered unfortunately the water pump has s**t a bearing |
