Ok now, I picked up a TFT timing light from supercheap for $80. Now i'm not testing the el till tomorrow, so I thought I might get a bit of practise on my mums car first (a 98? or 99 camry 4cyl). on the first lead, the timing mark was on the number 5 on the timing plate. was slightly jerky but more or less on the number 5 (this means 5 degrees advanced i'm assuming).
The second lead didn't show any mark, nor did the third one, however the forth one was showing the mark on number 5. The engine seems to be running pretty well, anything wrong i'm doing? Also, I read the instructions that came with the light, and it seemed easy enough to follow till it got to the timing adjustment part, anyhow, is it likely for the distributor cap to rotate by itself on an el due to vibration over the years?

im not too sure what the 5th timing mark means on a camry..
on the pix i showed u the ford went from TDC to 3 deg, 6 deg, 10 deg, and then 14 degrees. have to find out what they go up in on a camry to find out for sure.. put the timing light on it first and see what it says. if its constant around a certain mark (away from the standard setting) then it has moved. but if its jolting all over the place thats a sign that spark isnt good. borrow leads from another falcon to test (if u got a mate with a falcon of simular model) Tim.

Cheers, well I might test the lead resistances.
(I checked the camry and leads 1 and 2 read 10,800ohms, lead 3 showed 8,000 and lead 4 showed 6000. Also noticed, leads 1 and 2 flash very quickly but leads 3 and 4 only flash about a third of what 1 and 2 do.) Anyhow, enough about a stupid toyota, i'll post up what I find tomorow. Thanks again Tim.

Ok, I just got the call from my uncle, he pulled into a spot at tungstall square and the car just died, the leads arn't getting any spark so I think the coil has died, how do you test the coil?

Dont worry guys, I saw where the coil was located and even the dizzy and thought f**k that. I mean do they expect you to remove the intake manifold?? or somehow shrink your arms and add a couple more elbows, jesus!
Well here is the path the vehicle has chosen thanks to fords ingenious placement of ignition components.

Should just add, i'm pretty sure with the ELs you need to enter diagnostics to check the timing. Probably not a huge issue for you now, but just so you know! Might also explain the camry with its weird readings...

Ok, well the coil has already been changed by the mechanic for 130 including labor (not bad I thought). Anyhow, hes coming over tomorrow and im gonna change the leads and plugs. xf_xr6, this diagnostics mode you speak of will be very helpful for me tomorrow indeed. I had a look at the timing guide on fordforums.com.au in the technical section and it didn't say anything about diagnostics mode. Please explain.

some cars u need to bypass 2 points.
people usually use a paperclip and stick it in the right pins to short them.. they are different for every car.. and i dunno a whole lot on falcons so best to find out in tech section or in the repaid guide about it.. or ask sumone in the know.

yeah just did a search and can't find anything. Stupid thing... But from memory you short a pin and the engine will increase revs for either 30 secs or 1 min, thats when you check / adjust your timing.
I'm sure some1 can help more though |

cheers guys, I appreciate the good help so far, it says something about that in my EA repair manual, not sure how similar this may be for an el.

Ok, so after the coil was replaced, it was still misfiring like buggery. Now autobarn were out of stock of leads for any EL falcon!!! SO went to repco, got LPG topguns (cause apparently the LPG leads last longer) and bosch spark plugs. Anyway, what in principle should only take about half an hour took about 2 hours cause of where the distributor is!!!
Finally got all the leads and we think they were the same ones the car had when it was new cause it still had that corrigated conduit around it. spark plugs were burnt a bit. Distributor was caked in the white stuff inside and out but we got that all cleaned up nicely with a light sandpaper and wd-40. Then after getting the plugs in, put back the cap and spent ages putting the leads into it (we fed the leads through first thank god). Finally started it, idle was more static than a statue. Took it for a drive and gave it a boot and not 1 miss. WOOHOO.

so a timing light will give a reasonable indication that a lead is buggered, by showing the spark dancing around more than the others?

yeh, usually an inconsistent flash but sometimes hard to notice, you know something is wrong when the timing mark is jumping all over the place. I measured the resistance of number 6 plug lead (the shortest 1) and it came up with 16,000 ohms!!! With the caked distributor, I don't even know how it ran, probably what caused the coil to s**t itself.
