Ok i drove my car up a rather large hill the other day and in about 2 minsd it was on the n of normal on the temp gauge. It was also extremly sluggish. Any suggestions?

also check your ignition timing. if the timing is out it can cause it to overheat...

u did a head on the car and u havent checked the timing?

u need to put the car into self test mode (not sure how to do it without the ford scan tool) and then use a timing light to set the timing correctly..

you did the head - did you clean/flush the coolant system after - when a head gasket goes it can put a lot of junk into the water system and block the radiator

On the EL, to do timing, look for the Coms connector, under the fuse box, then the top & bottom pin on the extreme inside, connect them together with a suitable insulated female connectors, BUT start the engine first, wait for the engine to rev up, then come back to idle, then check timing, lines up with the pointer on timing case & harmonic balancer line.
Did you align the cam timing marks correctly? when you had the head off?

You did use new head bolts...? til I read further, I did`nt know it was an OHC4.0...1st thought was head gasket...

You filled the cooling system with De-min water and appropriate coolant, bled it for air...?

You did`nt check the timing... :roll: ?

Check your timing, make sure cam timing is correct also...failing that, get a pressure test done on the cooling system, might pick something up...

I have driven the car various times and it has gotten hot so the thermostat has opened and the coolant is still full. It only needed a very small amount of topping up the first time I ran it.
Still haven't checked the timing, need a timing light and my brother to gimme a hand.

My car gets hot, the thermostat opens and then the engine runs cooler...check your thermostat mate...

to my knowledge ya ment to have the radiator cap off and have the car at a fast idle to purge the system of air properly

Wouldnt driving it up a few hills do the same thing tho?

But what do u mean false idle?

the I6 is self purging, but it is better to give it a lending hand. air will get trapped behind the thermostat when replacing it.

to purge it it is best to leave the rad cap off and fast idle it (hold the rpm at about 2000) in order to warm the engine up, open the thermostat and let the air out, if there is a fair bit of air you will probably get some nice bubbles in the overflw tank.
