OK i filled my batt a bit back with tap water, now i have demineralised water, can i just tip all the water out and refill it with the demineralised water and then hook it up to the charger over nite? Will the tap water have caused any permanent damage?

Nope - its not just water in a battery, its a mixture of acid and water.
Tip out your water and your battery will not work again without a re-acid. We deal a lot with batteries in my work, and from what Century-Yuassa tell us, brisbane tap water is "ok" to use with their batteries. I don't know if your council adds any of the other crap to your water, such as fluoride. Demineralised is the way to go if you have it, and I wouldn't put anything other than that in my battery personally.

NO! The liquid in the battery is not 'just' water. It is an acid water mix. By using tap water you are theoretically reducing battery life as the chlorine/heavy metals will accumulate on the battery electrodes. Don't panic I always fill with tap water, even bore water and my batteries still last 2-3 years. Next time just use the demineralised now that you have some. If you are really worried, go and buy some INOX battery treatment and that will help out.

I previously used the correct water for batteries, but since I've become lazy in the last few years, the last few cars, I've used normal tap water - and have not had to replace batteries any more often than normal.

don't tip the water out. from now on just top up with the deminerilised water.

the use of tap water is fine if you know if it's hard or soft water.
ie. hard water = more additives/chemicals soft water = little or no additives/chemials. the use of soft water is ok but ionised water is better hard water is to be avoided. we used tap water at my old work in melbourne never had a issue.
