The EA failed rego because the steering rack is loose, I assume he means it is worn. Rather than throw money at this car I was thinking putting in a new rack into mine and using mine in the EA.

Two questions.
Does a EL V8 Rack fit into a EF 6?
Does an EF 6 rack fit into an EA?

The V8 rack doesn't have a power steer switch, so no.
The EL6 rack will fit into the EA, just use the whole thing from tie rod end to tie rod end, just make sure the splines are the same first, where the steering shaft hooks up to. The EA one is a a*** spline.

The web site won't let me put a word on here to describe the particular spline appearence. I tried to put "a***" as in opposite to "fine". Hope this clears it up.

Understood, I need to get an EF shaft to fit the finer pinion spline of the EF rack.

EL V8 rack will fit into an EF no problems.

EF rack will not fit into an EA. K-Frame mounts are different and the complete steering column is different. I'd run around and try and find a decent EA rack.

mate just get an EA rack....alot easier...the EF has roughly 2 more splines than the EA and the EL pinion is about 4cm longer than the EF. The v8's don't run a switch to tell when to regulate the fluid comin in...so don't even bother.

My advice (after rebuilding them for years now) is to get an EA rack. I got 2nd hand ones for $50 or rebuilt ones for $180.

Side by side they EF and EA are identical except the pinion splines. So my EF will go into the EA with a change of the intermediate shaft coupling. The V8 rack into my car won't be a problem as I can live without the ISC speed up on maximum steering extents.

I'm running on info I read on e-series when MADNC8 tried to put an EL rack into his NC. Turned into a much bigger job than he expected.

Yes EL racks have a longer pinion and a different spline so that would make it a real pain to do.

I have a decent steering rack and power steering switch that I replaced about a year or so ago...car hasn't been driven for almost a year.

but it shouldn't cost too much to get one from a wrecker?

phong =P~

Side by side, the VN - VS and the EA - EL are exactly the same as other. The differences between them are the pinion splines.(or on the vr -vs they dont have splines). Also the rack ends, I would double check the rack ends as well. One might be a*** thread where as the EF could be fine. I cant remember exactly. Ford racks last where as Im always doing Holdens.

So just remember that the looks of the housing won't be any diff. I can turn a vn commydore into an el falcon quite easily.

But yes, changing the inter shaft would work. As well as rack ends.

i have an el rack in my 90 model ea. it all fitted straight in. the only difference was the intermediate shaft needs to be shorter. everything else went in/lined up/ worked like a dream. it also seems like i have more steering lock now. is this possible ?
