Ok I finally got my last head bolt out, the snapped one and now I am getting ready to put the engine back together. What is the best way to clean the block to get it ready for the gasket and head. I have already had the head done ad it looks great, but the block doesn't look so nice. So how do I clean it.

get some gasket remover,and a grinder with a wire brush atttachment,if your intake is there make sure you cover all the holes,and an air compressor wouldn't go astray to help clean out the bores and galleries after,p.s have fun i spent a few hours yesterday doin the excact same thing,and don't clean all the crap of the pistons it helps with detonation,if you have or want to its okay but car will run rough for a few days after its all done,what did it cost to get your head done?if you don't mind disclosing.

I am very happy with my head, I could only fins 1 place that was still open, i had to drive all the way to Nedlands from mount nasura (about 35k's) to get it done but only paid $60 in the end.

Use a correct scraper.
And use the CRC gasket stripper with a stanley knife. Try not to use a wire attachment. If you use a wire attachment, STAY away from ALL galleries and bores the wire attachment as it will rounden the holes and fluids can seep under the gasket. altho.. most home mechanics do it this way and it works, but trust me you get far better results with time patients and elbow grease!

You'll need to remove the two dowel sleeves to do the areas around them properly.
You can use a large ezi out, or you can use a punch and collapse one side and pull it out. New ones if needed don't cost much - use a soft faced hammer to install them.

as kyrtox said id be using a gasket scraper, fine steel wool also works well along with half a can of crc gasket stripper. its a tedious job, but like anything else do it right the first time and you wont have to worry about it later.

I used petrol and a razor blade.....havent had a problem since.

a scraper n some hard work will do the job best as previously stated. i wouldn't recommend any power toolsd. green "scourer" material works great after you remove chunky bits. gasket remover, good quality WD40, all does the same job, as long as it's a solvent.
As for removing carbon off pistons, the more carbonperhaps the more compression given the elusive 'more power' but a cleaner engine is a more efficient engine. it's a personel preference when it comes down to it.
