I think physically they are roughly the same size.
The mounting tabs (For the screws) are in different locations (EA-ED being on the top on bottom, EF-EL being on the sides).

From memory, LowNA fitted an EF/EL surround, but still had his NA cluster installed, and there was a gap surrounding the cluster... But that was a very long time ago....

Also dont forget about the Data Line for the EF/EL models.
They require data from the EEC for things like RPM, temp, and gear position to function 100% correctly.

There is a Data output line for the EEC-IV computers, but I have NFI if the data line is compatible with the EEC-V computers used by the EF/EL clusters.

A couple of people have also converted the whole dash from EA-ED to EF-EL. Waggin is one, (I think) LowNA is another. But they also converted the EEC to an EEC-V

Hope this all helps

I have a hunch that the data line is compatible ?!?!?!?!

The reason why I say this is because,
1) The climate control module has been using this since the EA, right through to the AU models. The Climate control chip didnt change much from the EB to the EF models. (Climate control uses the line to turn on and off the compressor when the engine is under load, or overheating, and also tells the EEC-V to turn on the thermo fans if Aircon max is selected).

2) No-one (that I know of) has tried using the Data line from an EEC-IV to run an EF-EL cluster.

I guess its one of those things, I could be completely wrong, and the Data line is incompatible, or it might be the same as that used on the EEC-V models ????? The only way is to test the idea

I have an (Free) EF GLi cluster sitting around for anyone in Sydney wanting to test the theory out.
