OK, this is really starting to annoy me now, my Fuel Injected XF wont start, it's got spark, got fuel up to the injector rail, got compression, ignition timing hasnt been touched since it was running, distributor drive turning properley, seems to be no injector pulse as I pulled out some spark plugs and they were dry, had no fuel on them. Got a good battery is turning over nice and fast. We plugged an EF injector into the no. 1 injector plug, without hooking it to the fuel rail or anything, the car started, and ran on 5 cyl for a bit, disconnected the EF injector, plugged it back in to the XF injector and the motor stopped. Then I waited 10 mins, turned the key, gave it heaps of throttle and it started, running on 6 cylinders, albeit like a bag of crap. Took it up the road, seemed to go quite well but shut down again and now it wont restart AT ALL.....Any ideas would be appreciated.

Had this problem on a number of EFI XF's now with the external Bosch fuel pump. First check the fuel pressure and volume at the rail. You will need the correct guage set to do this. If the pressure - or - the volume is below the specification replace the filter and check again. If still below spec, drain the tank, remove the pick up assembly and check the internal connector hose. It is about 40mm long and it appears that either the ULP or lead substitute additive is making these internal hoses go soft and jelly like. As the pump draws the little internal hose is restricting the fuel by collapsing. If all this does not give you correct fuel pressure and volume replace the pump... Hope this helps.

Sorry but forgot one additional item. The reason it ran on 5 cylinders is that the rail pressure/volume is only enough to run 5 injectors. I have diagnosed this problem by disconnecting one injector and the motor will run badly on 5. Reconnect the injector and it wont run at all.
Anyone had this same problem?????

Yep. As you said, it is pretty common, but not easy to diagnose. To remove the pickup tho, you don't have to drain the tank. It comes out thru the top. Still easier if tank is only half full or less. That little hose is a pain in the a***. Iv'e had two fuel injected XF's do that hose. Once I replaced it I never had a problem there again tho

Yep. You are right but about draining the tank if it is a sedan but you have to drain if it is a wagon. GRIN..

Ok guys, seems to be running now, was out of fuel, it's running like a bag of crap now though I think it's due for a service.

The old out of fuel problem. That will most certainly cause hard starting.

Lol that wasnt the only reason there was a bit more to it the ECU relay had crapped itself as well.
