I know Volvo were in on the XR6T turbo. Mazda and Volvo are involved with the FOcus design. And Mazda also with the COurier and that van, Econovan or whatever.
But I was told the other day that Honda were in on the design of the original SOHC 3.9/3.2L I6 on the EA Falcoonas, anyone heard anything like this before? Sounds qqueer as Honda are in no way related to Ford as far as I knew, were those other companies are part owned and that...

Well if that is so, then it's very possible.

Anyone know why? Any more details? I would of thought there would of been enough knowlkedge in the Ford group (Ford US, AUS, Mazda, Volvo, Astin Martin, Land Rover, Lincon, etc.) to have done it themselves...

Like stockstandard said, Honda were in on the original alloy heads... I have the write up in an old magazine somewhere.

Back then Honda were experts in alloy head design and working with alloy. It was kind of a new thing for Ford, so they got the experience from elsewhere.

They actually cast the heads for a while and shipped them over here until Ford started doing their own casting.

Ford/Tickford also didn't do the work on the XR heads. Complete cars and engines were sent to Tickford in the UK to get the work done. Obviously Ford realised they didn't have the experience or facilities at the time to make the work happen.

The same reason the engines that can go to 9,500 rpm won't make anywhere near as much torque, especially down low where you want it in a big heavy car.

So we blame Honda then for the headgasket blowing issue? ;-)

i've got a vtec conversion on my car, slowly working out how to rev it to 9500rpm without blowing it!

Getting those really high revollies isn't easy. You need the right conrod length to stroke length ratio, and among other things, how light the valve train is, ie; titanium components, hollow camshafts, etc....
Look at m/cycle stuff, ie; Kwaka ZX250, redline of 19,500rpm, doesn't pull till 10,000rpm. One with racing stuff in it starts pulling at 14,000 rpm, ( I know this cause a mate had one.).
Anyway, light weight components and correct configuration of revolving components ( design ) all helps.

Ford looked at and even built twin cam EAs, they were 3.5litre from memory. But decided they were too expensive to produce to be worthwhile... Like a lot of stuff you don't think they've thought of, they looked and decided against it. After all, If you think they're out to make cars, you're kidding yourself.. Like everyone, they gotta make money first.. If it won't pay they won't build it.
