OK so my car isnt idling on gas, is idling high on petrol, overheats, is guttless. My brother told me that EL's hav an "automatic choke". Is it possible that the engine is getting too much fuel and not enough air? How can I test this?

i think your brother is full of it if he's serious. fuel injected motors dont have chokes. he's probably thinking of the broadband manafold setup at the front. the fact that your running gas probably wont help the performance of the car either.
the thing you really need to remember (im assuming its a conversion) that the ecu learns to idle on fuel then has to relearn on gas, then you swap again so your constantly moving the goal posts. run a diagnostic test. if your engine is getting the right amount of fuel the temperature should be highest because your getting the biggest fire. if its lean or rich there is no fire or a liquid near the fire cooling it.

If is on petrol, check map senser and vacuum line to it..Check timing, a rich condition is often caused by retarded timing...For overheating check thermostate, radiator and coolant fans...

didn't think of that, the radiator could be clogged up to the s**t. or something to that effect. the cooling system might be the cause

The only real way to check a radiator is to remove one of the side tanks and flush water through it. Best left to a radiator workshop.
Just flushing water through it will only prove that some of the tubes are clear, not all of them. To professionally clean a radiator will cost around $100. Where as a new one is about $180.

overheating and gutless engine in an el could mean your timing is out, as when the timing is out it wont run properly and will tend to overheat. also it will probably be a dog on fuel too.
whats your engine's condition like mate? has the head gasket shown any signs of being cactus?

I jst replaced the head gasket, that is why the timing might be out.

willygrice, when you did your head gasket, did you fill your radiator with water? or just leave it bone dry cause unless you keep it constantly filled by plugging its outlets, the sludgy deposits will block it up.
Do a compression test. And if you havent yet, buy a workshop manual, it has a whole heap of things you can do to diagnose and fix problems, it even lists symptons.

get it professionally cleaned, shouldn't cost too much, they will clean the tanks and core.
