To answer the question "can the factory fuel guage be used for both gas and petrol" Yes it can but its not just a matter of using the right sender and tapping into the guage.
I found this website that may be handy, look under "interfaces" they have some other goodies there too. http://www.peelinstruments.com.au/products.html |

Smokey...Retired! wrote: Hmm the days till my gas system are getting closer and closer I get more nervous hearing different reports from people on bad gas side effects & whatever effects to my car will be done once its in...was just thinking the XR has done already 200 000KM already on petrol...is putting gas on it now really tesating my engine? Are there any mods i shud know about to do to it when I get gas?
I put my AU 6 on dual-fuel at 180,000 km. It now has 290,000km up with NO probs attributatable to gas - just normal wear and tear due to mileage. The installer refused to sell me a valve lube system (needed on most engines) due to the quality of the metal in the Falc's valves and seats. This bloke does servicing and gas work on a fleet of 40+ taxis in Newcastle, so he knows his Falcs. There is a slight performance difference between petrol and gas. I have a stretch of road I use to check performance after tweaks to the engine. It ain't rocket science - I start from an intersection and check the speed when a newer stretch of tar starts. I get 115 km/h on fresh 98 octane vs 110 km/h on LPG. With the cam, chip, extractors and exhaust, I have no trouble winding up to 150 while overtaking on either petrol or gas. I could get more out of it on gas if I bought a Ford flash tuner and had it dyno tuned to map the ignition curve for gas (more advance at low revs, less up high than petrol). If you want to wring the last drop of performance out of your EF, then you'd need to get a TwEECer to do the same. One of the systems distributed by Victorian Autogas (I think it's an Impco system) uses the fuel gauge. The system I have just uses the 4 LED's. The 4 LED system is just as accurate as the fuel gauge - I use the tripmeter in preference to either. Regards, Tony.

If you have the standard 0-90ohm sender in your tank and install an extra 10 ohm resistor in series then a full tank of gas = 3/4 on the standard gauge and the empty light is still accurate. You can then switch gauges linking a relay to the LPG safety valve.

The vapour system will allow you to use the trip computer and is accurate too!

I reckon gas is good.
I run my car on petrol a few times a week to keep it fresh. I can go to Albury and back and it costs me $30. My CD changer is fitted inside my cabin, which means I can change discs without going into the boot.. Downside - no split fold rear seat practibility for long items. Other downside - now you have LPG, Frankston bogans scab you for petrol money.

My EF wagaon with basic OMVL system with a Tickford ECU is now getting 10.5l/100k on the highway and around 16l/100k around town. That is pretty good I think.

Smokey...Retired! wrote: oH yeah also the system im getting apparently uses a separate gauge. Any mod that can use the existing fuel gauge for both gas n petrol?
yeah its possible. when i get gas done on my EL i'll have a go. its do to with making a circuit which converts the resistance range on the gas tank sender to that which is received by the stocko fuel gauge.

If you have a daily gas is the way to go. Its cheap, reliable & u still have the power when u want it.

If you bought the car with LPG then you will be saving alot. Although if you have had the car converted, then its cost you $$2400 roughly to convert Now per week your saving say $45 average, its going to take around 53-54 weeks for those savings to equal the cost of the gas conversion (to pay it off in other words). Although after that your laughing! Wrong. With the government rebate the instalation of a LPG system is virtually free. in NSW the rebate it 2k, and i was quoted 2.1k to have it installed. LPG saves ALOT of money. |

I heard from a taxi driver you only really save about 30%.

Is that true? Thats about right as you use 30% more gas to travel the same distance as with petrol,to over come this an injection system uses around 10% gas,but it costs twice as much to fit, with injection though you don't loose power as there ain't a mixer fitted which in most cases restricts airflow.my wife has gas on her 2002 laser and can't notice any power loss, but on my xr8 with a large tb then a mixer around half the size it is noticeable.
