Toploader conversion into an EL XR6 so has anybody carried this out yet.
I've herd that the bell housing bolts straight up to the engine with no modifications need to be made and the EL tailshaft can be used is this true? |

Has been done a couple of times. You can modify a manual T5 bellhousing to take the toploader or get one from dellow/crs. That gets the box bolted up, then you need to setup the clutch and all the other stuff that hooks up to it.

cos toploaders about 4 times stronger!
'n who needs o/d when you have hp and build a car for performance! i mean theres a lot of powerglides out there pushing 10s' more gears aint always better!

[quote="Krytox"]cos toploaders about 4 times stronger![/quotAnd ten times older, and much more primative. There is a world of good boxes to use. And on that, I am still yet to break a T5, and have had some tough cars in front of them....next one is over 500hp...

True, Im yet to break one.
but have known ppl to do so. I understand the T5's are pretty shy with boost in 3rd gear. Don't know anyone to have killed a toploader, but im very sure its possible.. as you said they're 20+ yrs old. however nearly anyone can rebuild a toploader...

I have broken one, sheared the input shart, gammaboy on ff.au has done the same, and my engine builder popped one recently. Once again, torque kills them. T5's get a bad rap for no reason. Keep em tight, and fresh oil, and dont abuse them, they last |

Quote: however nearly anyone can rebuild a toploader... Im a massive fan of top loaders in the right places, Ive got a 351 in an XE, preatically made for a toploader, but I wouldnt be doing the conversion that your suggesting. Its quickly becomming the oposite of 'nearly anyone can rebuild a toploader' its actually becomming an art and few and few ppl will service them and parts are scarce these days.

is this setup streetable at all? i guess a h pattern is ok for sub 10sec passes but i if your shifting every few seconds then its either a vertical gate shifter or an auto.

I read something about this in Street Machine quite some time back; do you have any information on them? I'm thinking about a turbo conversion myself and dismissed this thread until I read the prospect of a sequential shifter. |

http://store.summitracing.com/partdetai ... toview=sku Ive had both and in my opinion this is a MUCH better shifter. {DESCRIPTION} Still a H pattern but a much smaller shift area and smooth as smooth!

IMO (which no one cares about anyway) a T5 is a strong box but not indestructible. I broke one in my XF but I also abused the hell out of it first.
From my experience the weakness in any gearbox is not the box itself, its the input and output shafts but mostly the clutch itself. The TE Cortina we ran a while ago (and am currently rebuilding an engine for) had a top loader in it. Didn't break the box but the shear torque would regularly sheer the bolts that hold the clutch to the flywheel. I wouldn't do the conversion. If you desperatly want to convert it to a tougher 5 speed got to a T5Z or a celica box.
