hey this might sound like a real stupid question but i've always wondered if i have a cam or not. it all started when i took my aunty's el for a drive and noticed that my ef revs alot harder once past 3000-3500. down low seems the same but my engine seems to open up just that litle bit more once in the higher half of the rev range. also lined my car up against a friends el xr6 and to 100k i was half a car length in front (noticed it pulled away from the end of first gear and into second) i mean it isnt much but it shouldnt be able to do that with the mods i already have. the only mods i know that i have are 2.5 exhaust with extractors, shift kit, and k&n filter.

all cars are auto. the xr6 is an el (2.5 exhaust, k&n filter) and the other one tested was an el fairmont(stock). both cars newer and less kays than my ef fairmont.

What are the main characteristics of an aftermarket cam?

Depends which cam...

Only way to tell is to ask previous owners, or remove the rocker cover and rocker gear and see if there's any markings on the cam.

Wade and a few other guys stamp the grind on the rear of the cam, you'll need a little mirror to see it if you leave the cam in the car, it's right up against the firewall.

In the absence of visual markings, pulling the cam and having its specs measured would be the only way to 100% verify.

Can do some basic tests, like measure vacuum at idle and compare it to a stock reading (even that can be affected by other issues)...

I have those mods you mentioned. And the EL intake to throttle body on my EF. But I put in a 2" exhaust section from the single muffler back to cut the drone noise. Now it's quiet with normal drivng but growls loudly when I step on the gas. Mine revs beautifully with ECON off. Really pulls, but I only have a standard cam.

Could measure valve lift off the rocker with cam still in the car, and compare to stock specs, easiest way if it's not stamped.
Would at least let you know whether it is aftermarket or not.
If you know the cams lift it also puts you in a very large ballpark of what grind it might be
If it is aftermarket, unless you plan on wanting more, I wouldn't bother taking it out to get measured.
If it goes good, it goes good :D
Just tell people you've got a "Stage 2" cam

a car with exhaust mods will be quicker than an xr6, xr6's dont have a big advantage against stock
