Just had a query on whether or not to fill your Oil in your motor to exactly smack bang on the "Full" Level on your dipstick or not. And is bad for your engine if you have filled it a tiny bot over the "Full" mark on the dipstick. Or is not good if it is always sitting just on the "OK" part. Whats the story either way

I always fill to the 'FULL' mark maybe just a little bit above, alaways check your oil when engine is cold and been sitting or it will be low by default.

I was always told to check the oil when the engine was warm or at operating temperature. If you check it cold then its likely to be higher as the oil has had some time to drain back into the sump. But as delboy said, makes sense to have it at "full" when cold as when oil pumped to the necessary places the sump level should drop. Things like tranny dipsticks have a range on them to account for this.
Over filling the engine not too bad, will most likely find its way to the oil breather... dunno how much oil is too much to be flowing thru the manifold and burning in the engine? May also put resistance on the crank if its splashing thru oil in the sump.

Reason I ask is, yeah had me EL sitting in me driveway for the past 2 days and I decided to check the Oil level and it was a "Tad" over the Full mark on the dipstick. And I wasn't sure if I should start draining it out from the sump. like if having to much Oil in your motor is no good maybe

I have found that if i check my oil when hot and waiting 3mins etc., and topping up as needed i use oil.Now that i check the oil hot and wait 15-20mins and top up from there next to no oil is used??

Fill the sump to specified capacity..I/e 5 ltrs [approx] with filter etc...There is a seal in end of dipstick that often come out.Which changes oil level lower...
I wouldn't over fill, unless racing slicks are fitted and racing on curcuit alittle over full to prevent oil surge...Not usually a problem on 6's...

plus if you ever want to drain a little bit of oil out, dont touch the sump plug, pull the filter off, empty it, and put it back on again.
much easier than draining from the sump.

Mu oil is about 2 inches over max mark, never had any probs, Ford always dumb levels down, as long as the crank dont slosh in it, its fine.

you can check the oil warm but u have to let the oil drain back to the sump. ie about 5 mins worth u cannot check the oil just after the car has stopped as there is oil in th oil galleries and and on top of the head the oil level on the dipstick is based for when the oil has drained back to the sump and does not include the oil in the filter. If you overfill the sump the crank can hit this oil causing power loss and what not. so a small touch overfill will not hurt there is a safety margin there i would say a good few cms will be fine
