Couple of questions regarding the old lane.

Firstly, for those who dont know, Ill give you some details on the car. Its an 88 NA fairlane, lowered, wheels zorst ect. 3.9ltr bottom end, el head and lifters, wade cam, el inlet etc, el dash, 5 speed manual, el xr6 ecu, blah blah blah the list goes on. Basically, a manual el inside an NA body shell.

Anyway, onto the problems.

1st.
Head gasket went a couple of months ago. For a while before this, it would tend to hold revs when pulling up to lights (around 2000rpm), idle kinda funny, and be rough when down shifting to slow down. After the head was done and it was serviced, all was good. Fuel consumption also went down to below 15ltrs per 100. Now, the old problems have come back, and fuel usage is just under 18ltrs per hundred.

Second problem.
Started a month roughly after the head was done. Im getting a slight rattle whilst on idle. It goes away till about 1400rpm when it comes back, then goes away at around 1900 rpm. Any suggestions as to what it could be? Im thinking mabey chain guides?

Any help would be great.

What kind of rattle is it? metal against metal?

My engine hass a rattle aswell, except it sounds more like a helicopter when the revs get higher, and thats due to an exhaust manifold gasket.

Try and listen to where abouts it is.

That rattle could really be anything, need more info. As for the fuel problem again, I feel that perhaps you have got a leaking head gasket again. What brand of gasket did you use and what type is it? My local mechanic has tried a few and told me that some are real s**t and cars have had to be redone 3x!!

I was actually thinking that it could be gasket related :(

Oh well, back off to the mechanics again I guess. Last thing I need 3 weeks before moving to QLD though.

The rattle could be the timing chain.. I have a similar sound in the Waggin due to so much machining of the head and block, it leaves exrtra slack on the chain.

Possibly your tensioner didnt release properly or something.

yah as brad said, i was going to suggest possibly timing chain rattle, as it can especially be noticeable at only certain revs.
is it more noticable as it revs down or up ?
or again its possible the head gasket is leaking again, as you are experiencing the same issues as happened before.
its unfortunate :(

Im thinking that the two issues are seperate, and not related. As for the rattle, if it is the chain, is it something that needs urgent attention, or not something to be too concerned about?

i had a rattle like that once turns out the bearings in one of my pulleys on the drive belts was rooted and just needed to be replaced

Buggered lifters give more of a tick than a rattle.
I also think it's the chain. Mine was like that after going my head and cam (probably didnt retention it properly or something) It would rattle as you describe it and go by 2000 revs. Mine got worse over time until it was rattling at idle as well.

Waggin is your rattley chain a permanant thing now with the amount taken off your head/block ?? I don't think I had quite as much taken off as you but mine is a little rattley too. I figured that could be re-adjusted a bit more once everything is worn in and it's re-tentioned up...

Yeh, its been permanent since the work at JMM. JMM weren't concerned about the noise, and nor was Mark @ ITS. Theres not alot that can be done. Brendan did mention shimming up the timing chain tensioner to get a bit more tension, but it never happened. I'm not conerned by it. I get it constantly between ~800-1300rpm.. away from there I cant here it.

Above 1500rpm I can hear the valves snapping closed ;)

haha, I went from having a tired old rattley engine to having a fresh new rattley engine. I might look into this shim thing, valve noise I can live with but the rattles at idle are a little annoying.

i think it could be a buggered lash adjuster. usually youll hear them rattling on idle and then it would dissapear and come back when revs kick up???
